One of the biggest issues in the Muslim community, especially the American Muslim community is whether an animal has to be slaughtered in the traditional Halal method which is mentioned Allah/God over the animal and then slaughtering it by cutting at the neck below the jaw bone (dhabh) or fatally injuring in the neck or upper chest (nahr).
Both forms of slaughter are considered dhakaatun which is mentioned in the Quran.
Here are the relevant passages:
6:138
"And they say: Such cattle and crops are forbidden. No-one is to eat of them save whom we will - in their make-believe - cattle whose backs are forbidden, cattle over which they MENTION NOT the name of Allah. (All that is) a lie against Him. He will repay them for that which they invent"
5:3
"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. "
Slaughter it (in due form) is dhakkaytum here. or dhakkaa. It means to killed by nahr or dhabh, which I explained above. So Animals must be killed with God's name mentioned over them and they must be killed being cut at the neck below the jaw bone or injured in the neck or chest area. Then it is Halal.
Godbless
